The cognitive agent: Overcoming informational limits
نویسنده
چکیده
Within a biological organism it is possible to identify a number of general functions facilitated by internal mutually connected mechanisms. The organization responsible for material and energy exchange with the environment and the integration of those into the operation of the organism is broadly classi ed as the metabolic system. The organization responsible for identi cation of external invaders and the intervention and elimination of the invaders is classi ed as the immune system. The organization responsible for generating of a copy or a closely resembling organism is the reproductive system. The organization responsible for controlling the interactions of the organism with the environment, usually to facilitate other functions, is classi ed broadly as the cognitive system. Other such general functions In philosophical discussions the term cognition is commonly used to refer to the high level capacity or activity of thought, and it is contrasted with perception, a ection, instinct, and other lower capacities.

The Cognitive Agent
In this project I investigate what minimal conditions can allow a system to be regarded as a cognitive agent, i.e. what the subject of cognitive science is. An agent is a highly organized complex system which has intrinsic goals (in its minimal sense, persistence within viability boundary) and whose dynamical organization supports an informational description. Every agent, it follows, is inform...
متن کاملA multi agent method for cell formation with uncertain situation, based on information theory
This paper assumes the cell formation problem as a distributed decision network. It proposes an approach based on application and extension of information theory concepts, in order to analyze informational complexity in an agent- based system, due to interdependence between agents. Based on this approach, new quantitative concepts and definitions are proposed in order to measure the amount of t...
متن کاملOvercoming Cognitive and Motivational Barriers to Media Literacy: A Dual-Process Approach
Overcoming Cognitive and Motivational Barriers to Media Literacy: A Dual-Process Approach by Erica Lynn Rosenthal Claremont Graduate University: 2012 In today’s fast-paced, hyper-mediated society, the ability to balance accuracy and efficiency is essential. Media literacy educational programs have arisen to meet this need and proliferated in recent years. Although the practice of media literacy...
متن کاملMind and Artifact: A Multidimensional Matrix for Exploring Cognition-Artifact Relations
What are the possible varieties of cognitionartifact relations, and which dimensions are relevant for exploring these varieties? This question is answered in two steps. First, three levels of functional and informational integration between human agent and cognitive artifact are distinguished. These levels are based on the degree of interactivity and direction of information flow, and range fro...
متن کاملEvolution and the structure of learning agents
This paper presents the thesis that all learning agents of finite information size are limited by their informational structure in what goals they can efficiently learn to achieve in a complex environment. Evolutionary change is critical for creating the required structure for all learning agents in any complex environment. The thesis implies that there is no efficient universal learning algori...
